An Introduction to the Use of Encryption

By Peter Meyer

http://www.finecrypt.net/meyer.html

This site gives you an in depth description of encryption, what it is, and why you may need it for confidential information. Not for the faint hearted or those who haven't got state secrets...

A number of us use AVG antivirus - the free download. The only disadvantage Deb has found is that if you have a family of multi users on XP you need to use the log out function rather than switch users as it will only cover one user at a time on the same machine.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 scroll to the bottom of the page for the free download.

AVG products (paid) come with a two year licence which is worth watching if looking at costs.

Spyware

You could use the free Microsoft anti spyware software-

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Other useful ( and free ) software includes "ad-aware" by Lavasoft and "Spybot" Search and destroy which can be downloaded easily (once you have a good connection ).

These will help you to get rid of (and help tracing) files which may be damaging or slowing down your system.

Firewalls

Two of the services mentioned by Ian were as follows:

Sygate - available free from http://www.tucows.com/preview/213160

http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

and Black Ice, Link below..

http://www.download.com/BlackICE-PC-Protection/3000-2092_4-10316410.html

(free to try $40 to buy…)

Please note although Windows XP has an integral firewall most computer professionals do not think it offers sufficient protection.

If you still want more detail about the encryption within the mesh network, the following link might be of interest

http://www.locustworld.com/ Suppliers of the Mesh system -lots of links etc

or SSL encryption at

If you have any good links of your own please post them in comments and add to this list
thanks,

Woody's office watch is a free newsletter which keeps you updated on the latest news and free advice on email essentials (such as phishing)

Email to join : WEE@office-watch.com

The latest phishing scam is to do with hurricane Katrina, bogus emails arrive pretending to be from amazon or other 'good' companies. Make sure you never click on any link in any of these emails. If you want to donate go to the real site via your browser and log in with your account.
Watch out for paypal frauds too, these are nearly as common as the bank ones that fooled a lot of people earlier in the year.
